Amethyst Meadows began with a simple desire: to make a bar of soap I truly enjoyed using.
For years, I struggled to find soaps that agreed with my sensitive skin. Fragrances in many commercial soaps were particularly troublesome, so finding something I liked was always a challenge.
Then my daughter, after having her own baby, introduced me to handmade tallow soap when she brought me a bar to try.
I loved the idea of traditional, handcrafted tallow soap, but there was just one problem. I missed the lather. It also left me feeling like I wasn't being thoroughly rinsed. Still, the benefits of tallow soap kept me interested.
Fast forward a couple of years and a friend suggested we try making soap ourselves. Together, we experimented with a couple of recipes. But I wasn't quite satisfied.
I wanted to find a way to bring together the qualities I liked best about both of those recipes.
My next stop was a book about soapmaking. From there I learned how to formulate my own recipes.
Then my husband entered the picture with a special request: he wanted a beard soap.
And that's when the real experimenting began!
That request led to Ox Warrior, affectionately named after him, and marked a turning point in my soapmaking journey. We continued experimenting, eventually developing a base recipe for most of our other soaps, while Ox Warrior and Velvet Rose each kept their own unique formulas. Along the way, we discovered just how much we enjoyed the process.
Before long, we were making so much soap that we began joking about selling it.
Eventually, the joke became an idea. And the idea became Amethyst Meadows.
Today, Amethyst Meadows is a woman-owned small business in Florida, creating handcrafted soaps in small batches with thoughtfully chosen ingredients.
What began as a personal search for a better soapmaking experience has grown into something we're excited to share with others.
